Local moves are usually priced by time
For a move across town, the price mostly comes down to how many movers you need and how many hours the job takes, from the first box loaded to the last box set down. Stairs, long walks from the door to the truck and tight parking all add time.
Long-distance moves are usually priced by weight and distance
Once a move crosses state lines or covers a long haul, the estimate is typically built from the weight or volume of your belongings and how far they travel. Fuel, tolls and the driver's time are part of that number.
What moves the price either way
- How much you're moving. Decluttering before the estimate is the single biggest lever you control.
- Access at both ends: stairs, elevators, long carries and parking permits.
- Packing: doing it yourself saves money; full packing saves your weekend.
- Timing: weekends, summer and the end of the month are the busiest times.
- Specialty items: pianos, safes, large TVs and antiques need extra care and equipment.
How to compare quotes
Ask for an itemized estimate so you can see what's included: labor, truck, materials, fuel and any extra charges. A quote that doesn't list its parts is hard to compare and easy to change on moving day.
