How to pack fragile items like a pro

Plates on edge, glasses in cells, nothing loose. The packing habits that keep breakables in one piece.

4 min read

Start with the right box

  • Use small, sturdy boxes for heavy fragile things. A big box full of dishes is too heavy to carry safely.
  • Tape the bottom with two strips across and one down the middle.
  • Line the bottom with a few inches of crumpled packing paper before anything goes in.

Wrap every piece on its own

  • Plates: wrap each one and stand them on edge, like records. They're far stronger that way than stacked flat.
  • Glasses and mugs: stuff the inside with paper, wrap the outside, and use cell dividers if you have them.
  • Lamps: remove the shade and bulb and pack them separately.
  • Frames and mirrors: tape an X across the glass, wrap in paper, then padding, and pack upright.

Fill every gap

Nothing should shift when you gently shake the box. Fill empty space with crumpled paper, towels or linens. Movement in the box is what breaks things.

Label it so it's handled right

  • Write FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP on at least two sides.
  • Add the room it goes to, so it gets carried straight there.
  • Tell your crew which boxes are fragile, and keep anything irreplaceable with you.
